Established in 2006 during the gradual liberalization of the Swiss electricity market, Swissgrid owns, operates, and controls the Swiss electricity transmission grid. Responsible for inspecting, maintaining and expanding the transmission infrastructure, which includes lines, substations and switchgears, Swissgrid also monitors the grid to ensure a consistent balance between electricity production and consumption. Funding for Swissgrid comes from regulated tariffs applied to all electricity consumers.

The backbone of electricity supply

In its role as an impartial entity managing the transmission grid, Swissgrid ensures the stability of electricity supply throughout Switzerland.

Regulated profits

Within the legal framework, volume-related risks are largely eliminated. Swissgrid’s earnings before interest are regulated by multiplying the invested operating assets by the regulated capital cost rate.

Natural and legally-anchored monopoly

Due to significant construction costs and the advantages of scale, the electricity transmission sector naturally forms a monopoly, as is anchored in the law. Consequently, Swissgrid faces minimal competitive pressures or strict ownership restrictions from the state.

Ongoing enhancement of network

Swissgrid is continuously investing in the modernization and expansion of its network, which is in line with anticipated future needs.
